Following the historic trilateral meeting on 12 April 2024 (Manila time) among US President Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the White House in a statement underscored the historic achievements in bilateral relations between the Philippines and the United States since President Biden and President Marcos last met in May 2023. The leaders welcomed recent milestones in advancing their clean energy and technology partnership. In terms of technology partnership, the field of cyber-digital cooperation was highlighted. The United States and the Philippines plan to hold their first bilateral Cyber-Digital Dialogue in July 2024 in Washington. This dialogue focuses on helping strengthen the Philippines’ resilience against cyber intrusions from state-backed and criminal organizations and advance an open, interoperable, secure, reliable, and trusted information communications technology ecosystem in the Philippines. Supporting this work, the U.S. Trade and Development Agency is providing a grant to NOW Telecom Company, Inc., an associate of NOW Corporation, for a feasibility study to help develop a secure nationwide 5G network in the Philippines utilizing equipment from trusted vendors. The project objective is threefold, involving key infrastructure components: first, to design and implement a pilot 5G SA network in Metro Manila; second, to design a nationwide stand-alone 5G wireless network; third, to design and plan for a nationwide broadband network.
