Press Release entitled “Puregold 1Q23 Net Income Grows to P2.4bn, Up 12% YoY”
Background/Description of the Disclosure
Manila, Philippines – Retail leader Puregold Price Club, Inc. (PGOLD) grew consolidated net income of Php 2.4 billion in the first three months of 2023 which represents a 12% growth from Php 2.2 billion in the same period last year on the back of higher comparative sales. Strong topline growth was tempered by compressed gross profit margins and higher operating expenses as the company gears up for more aggressive expansion. The retailer has continued to pursue an aggressive multi-year push to expand its reach and enrich its customer accounts through harder-hitting promotions and levelled-up joint business plans with its suppliers.
PGOLD consolidated net sales for the first quarter rose by 15% year on year to Php 44.4 billion. Topline momentum continued as consumption was robust even as inflationary pressures persisted. In the first quarter, groupwide same stores sales was up 11.3% versus the same period last year. Broken down by banners, the enterprise experienced positive same store sales growth (SSSG) of +8.8% from Puregold Stores and +16.8% from S&R Warehouse Clubs. For the topline, Puregold Stores contributed Php 30 billion while S&R Warehouses contributed Php 14.4 billion, up 12% and 23%, respectively, versus the same period last year.
In the first quarter, PGOLD opened 5 new Puregold stores, 1 S&R Membership Shopping Warehouse and 1 S&R New York Style QSR. As of end-March 2023, the group had a total of 531 stores nationwide. These include 456 Puregold stores, 23 S&R Membership Shopping Warehouses, and 52 S&R New York Style QSRs.
